Ah, The Kings's Coronation Bank Holiday in London

A weekend of royal pomp, merriment and festivities

The coronation of King Charles III is just around the corner, so now is the time to start getting excited. The event will be held on 6 May 2023 and is the first coronation in nearly 70 years, the longest the country has ever gone without such a ceremony.

King Charles III's coronation is expected to be an unrivalled historic occasion, offering regular people in the United Kingdom and overseas nationals the chance to experience the event in person.

During the formalities, officials will ask King Charles III if he would govern the UK and the other countries in the Commonwealth as head of state and if he would maintain Christianity in the nation.

Only a minority of MPs and peers will attend King Charles's coronation. However, more spaces may become available at Buckingham Palace following pleas to accommodate additional guests.

When Is The Coronation Bank Holiday?

While his majesty's coronation will occur on 6 May 2023, there will be an additional bank holiday on Monday May 8, two days after the ceremony. This extra bank holiday will take place across the United Kingdom to strengthen both local and national events and pay tribute to the new monarch.

Can You Watch The Coronation On TV?

The King's coronation will be televised throughout the United Kingdom and internationally. The move comes after the Accession Council agreed on the broadcast live last year after the queen's funeral. The late Queen Elizabeth also requested the broadcasting of her coronation ceremony in 1953 when she was officially crowned.

Speculation suggests that King Charles III could become the nation's first monarch to be publicly anointed at the historic occasion. Planners are building a transparent canopy in Westminster Abbey where TV crews, in-person onlookers, and the royal family will witness live events.

What Will Happen During The Coronation?

King Charles and Queen Consort Camilla will begin proceedings at Buckingham Palace before proceeding to Westminster Abbey in procession. They will then receive their crowns at the Abbey in a service conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury, starting at 11 am.

Pageantry will reflect King Charles' tastes and preferences. However, the structure of the coronation bank holiday will take the core elements from historical periods.

The King has asked Lord Andrew Lloyd-Webber to write the Coronation Anthem, which will respect history and the monarch's role today. When he takes the crown, King Charles III will pledge to remain the "Defender of the Faith."

However, he will also add lines stating that he will protect and serve all religions in light of Britain's multicultural society.

In 1953, 8,000 guests travelled to Westminster Abbey for Queen Elizabeth's coronation. However, his Majesty King Charles III will limit numbers to 2,000 for health and safety reasons.

What Will The King Wear During The Coronation?

During the coronation service, the King will receive St Edward's Crown, a solid gold crown encrusted with more than 500 gemstones of varying sizes, including rubies, sapphires and garnets. Upon leaving the Abbey, he will wear the Imperial State Crown.

Most commentators believe King Charles III will arrive at the ceremony wearing his military uniform. This regalia will then comprise the majority of his attire for the big day.

Charles will wear the Robe of State when he enters Westminster Abbey. This robe is also sometimes called Parliament Robe and monarchs wear it for the State Opening of Parliament.

Charles will also hold or put on a range of sacred objects during the ceremony. These are based on the Royal Book or Liber Regalis, which details what order the monarch should wear garments.

Robes and other items are supposed to evoke the weight of responsibility brought by Royal life.

What Will Happen After The Coronation Ceremony?

Following the coronation of King Charles III, there will be a bank holiday weekend of events, including the coronation concert at Windsor Castle.

The BBC will issue 5,000 free tickets to lucky members of the public who can watch an all-star line-up of global music icons and contemporary stars for a once-in-a-lifetime musical celebration.

Those who can't attend in person can experience this unique moment on BBC One, BBC iPlayer, and BBC Sounds.

People across the country will also take part in the Coronation Big Lunch where neighbourhoods and communities will share food and have fun.

The prime minister will host his own Big Lunch at Downing Street which will invite volunteers from across the United Kingdom.

How To Celebrate The Coronation of King Charles III in London?

King Charles and the Queen Consort's coronation combines the traditional pomp of royalty with good old-fashioned fun.

Several thousand members of the royal entourage, VIPs, and selected members of the public will witness events directly, while thousands more will throng the streets, getting glimpses of what's happening.

The government is gearing up for a party atmosphere by making changes to the Licensing Act (2003). This change means bars, clubs, and pubs can extend their licensing hours over the bank holiday weekend.
